MAIN AI UPDATES / 23rd March 2026
🤖 OpenAI targets fully autonomous AI researcher by 2028 🤖
OpenAI plans a phased rollout of autonomous research agents starting this September.
OpenAI is developing a multi-agent system it calls the "AI researcher" — capable of handling complex tasks across math, science, coding, and policy with minimal human oversight. An intermediate version, dubbed the "AI research intern" for smaller multi-day tasks, is expected by September 2026, with a fully autonomous system targeted for 2028. The architecture combines Codex, reasoning models, and monitoring systems with sandboxed environments for safety. In parallel, OpenAI plans to nearly double its headcount from roughly 4,000–4,500 to 8,000 employees by end of 2026, hiring across product development, engineering, research, and sales. This signals competitive pressure to automate research faster than rivals while scaling human operations in tandem.
🚀 Musk's $25B Terafab targets world's largest chip plant 🚀
A joint venture across Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI to replace external chip suppliers.
Elon Musk unveiled Terafab, a $20–25 billion joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI to construct what he claims will be the world's largest chip manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. The facility aims to generate a terawatt of computing power annually — roughly 50x current global output — through vertical integration covering logic, memory, packaging, and testing. Two chip types are planned: one optimized for Tesla vehicles and Optimus robots, and a space-grade chip for solar-powered AI satellites launched via Starship. Musk claims space-based compute will undercut terrestrial costs within 2–3 years. This reduces Musk's dependence on external chip suppliers, a major strategic shift for his AI ambitions.
🧠 Zuckerberg builds personal AI agent to run Meta 🧠
Meta's CEO integrates an AI agent directly into daily corporate decision-making.
Mark Zuckerberg is personally building an AI agent to assist him as Meta CEO, already using it to pull information quickly without navigating through layers of personnel. Meta is restructuring around flatter team hierarchies and AI-first workflows, with employees developing agents that access internal files, search company data, and communicate with other agents. Some agents are already functioning as an "AI chief of staff" to help manage projects and retrieve information. This adoption signal from a top executive could reshape corporate management practices across the industry, with the CEO himself serving as the earliest internal user.

🎨 Microsoft ships MAI-Image-2 with 115-point text upgrade 🎨
Microsoft's AI Superintelligence team rolled out MAI-Image-2, a text-to-image model that debuted at No. 5 on the Arena AI leaderboard — trailing only Gemini variants and GPT Image-1.5. The biggest upgrade is in text rendering, which jumped 115 points, delivering sharper posters, slides, and infographics. MAI-Image-2 is freely accessible in Microsoft's MAI Playground for U.S. users, with broader rollout via Copilot, Bing, and API access on Foundry coming soon. Competitive pressure in image generation is intensifying fast.
💰 Bezos seeks $100B for AI manufacturing fund 💰
Jeff Bezos is reportedly in talks to raise $100 billion to acquire chip, defense, and aerospace manufacturers and integrate them with AI through his secretive startup, Project Prometheus. The fund would be one of the largest AI-focused investment efforts in history, rivaling some sovereign wealth funds. This pricing of AI's expansion beyond software — directly into physical production and supply chains — signals a new paradigm for how AI reshapes traditional manufacturing and defense sectors.
