💻 Windsurf CEO Joins Google 💻
DeepMind hires top AI coding talent in reverse-acquihire deal

OpenAI's $3 billion acquisition of viral AI coding startup Windsurf fell apart on Friday, with Google DeepMind immediately hiring CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and top AI coding talent in a reverse-acquihire deal.

Google gets a nonexclusive license to Windsurf technology while the startup remains independent under interim CEO Jeff Wang, with most of its 250-person team continuing to serve enterprise customers.

The failed acquisition was reportedly a major tension point in OpenAI's Microsoft contract renegotiations, as OpenAI didn't want Microsoft accessing Windsurf's AI coding technology through their IP-sharing agreement. Windsurf reached $100 million ARR in April (up from $40 million months earlier), making it one of the hottest AI coding startups alongside the growing importance of AI development tools.

🧠 Beam reveals the Blueprint for Building Agentic Apps 🧠
How AI-native tools are reshaping the way software gets built

Beam Cloud just dropped a must-read breakdown of how modern agentic apps work and why they matter. These aren’t just smarter apps, they’re autonomous systems built to reason, iterate, and self-correct. At the core of the piece is an inside look at how tools like Lovable and Bolt are architected: combining model clients, prompt-based RPC, secure execution environments, and continuous control loops. This is a clear shift from traditional dev tools to AI-native workflows, where the app doesn’t just assist—it thinks, tests, and evolves on its own. As autonomous agents move from experimental to production-ready, Beam’s post sets a new standard for what developer tools of the future will look like.

🚀 China's Moonshot AI Releases Open-Source Kimi K2 🚀
1-trillion parameter model targets agentic AI

Moonshot AI has released Kimi K2, a 1-trillion parameter open-source model with enhanced coding capabilities and agentic task integration, as the Alibaba-backed startup seeks to reclaim its position in China's competitive AI market. Founded in 2023 by Tsinghua graduate Yang Zhilin, Moonshot claims Kimi K2 outperforms mainstream open-source models including DeepSeek's V3 and rivals U.S. models from Anthropic in coding functions.

Pre-trained on 15.5 trillion tokens using a novel "MuonClip" optimizer to prevent training failures, Kimi K2 features sophisticated agentic capabilities developed through data synthesis with thousands of tools and Model Context Protocol compatibility.

🔢 Robinhood CEO's AI Startup Harmonic closed a $100 million funding round 🔢

Harmonic AI, co-founded by Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, has raised $100 million in Series B funding led by Kleiner Perkins, valuing the math-focused AI startup at $875 million after less than two years since launch. The company focuses on "mathematical superintelligence" with its flagship model Aristotle, which achieved a 90% success rate on MiniF2F benchmarks by solving complex math problems from high school to International Mathematical Olympiad level.

Sam Altman delays OpenAI's Open Model again

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced Friday that the company is delaying its first open-weight model release again, pushing back a launch originally scheduled for next week indefinitely. In a post on X, Altman explained "we need time to run additional safety tests and review high-risk areas" and "once weights are out, they can't be pulled back.

This is new for us and we want to get it right." The model, which would be OpenAI's first open release since GPT-2, was initially planned for early summer before being delayed to later summer, and now faces an indefinite postponement.
